Kametaro Kawai, a Japanese doctor of pharmacology, appreciated the nutritional benefits
of cod liver oil but disliked its unpleasant fish-like flavour; as a result,
he decided to develop a means of making the oil more palatable. In 1911, he made
a breakthrough with the Kanyu Drops , a chewable, easily digestible fruit-flavoured
jelly drop vitamin made from cod liver oil, yet without the nasty taste.
He was the first person in the world to change the liquid form of cod liver oil into a solid form, and this
breakthrough is still viewed in high regard in the medical field today. |
